This WebQuest was developed for a three week summer school session with a theme of "Summer Safari." Students will use Communication Arts, Science, Geography, and Math skills to research various animals found on the continent of Africa, and share their knowledge with an audience. Prior to beginning, it is important for the students to know the terms; tourist, meter, diet, and habitat for they will appear in their reading.

The riddle book can be created independently by each student, or by using the activity page which allows the students to read and complete the sentences. View and print a copy if desired. The teacher may want to assign the five animal choices, depending on the needs of the class.

The graphing activity can be done with or without the use of the computer. Students may also be required to complete individual graphs, or the class may create one group graph.

Displays can be created with a variety of mediums. I have intended this activity to be a diorama using paintable clay for the animal with paper and paint to create the habitat. View the recipe for paintable clay.

As a concluding activity, parents will be invited to our safari to be the tourists, viewing activities completed during this WebQuest. As tour guides, students will present their projects, and answer any questions.

In addition to the tasks described in this WebQuest, students will be reading and listening to a variety of poems and stories relating to animals of Africa. They will perform a reader's theater version of the play "How the World Got its Wisdom" from Multicultural Plays for Children vol. 1 Grades k-3, by Pamela Gerke. Students will also be creating crafts and art activities from the African culture.
